Krista’s Chronic Clarity

Bringing clarity to mold, infections and the emotions that keep us stuck

Dear Friends,

As many of you know, health challenges often show up when we least expect them. Recently, my family and I moved into a short-term furnished rental, and despite what looked like a clean space, we quickly discovered it was contaminated with toxic mold (Stachybotrys). Within just a couple of days, every member of our household—including our dog—was showing symptoms.

This experience reminded me how easily mold can hide, how varied symptoms can be, and how important it is to act quickly if you suspect exposure. I want to share our story, not to alarm you, but to empower you with practical steps should you ever find yourself in a similar situation.

Recognizing Mold Symptoms

Mold affects everyone differently, depending on vulnerabilities:

  • Children may show neurological or behavioral changes (nightmares, anxiety and sleep disruption. Gastrointestinal changes might include stomach pain, reflux, sudden constipation, diarrhea or burning stool). Skin rash or severe histamine reactions (think massive reactions to bug bites) might show up.

  • Adults may experience insomnia, joint pain, tingling/numbness, excessive fatigue, headaches, brain fog or mood shifts.

  • Pets can also be sensitive—look for red, irritated eyes, lethargy, appetite loss, or skin rashes.

What We Did to Protect Ourselves

Remove Belongings from Contamination

  • We placed our personal items in a temperature-controlled storage unit immediately.

  • Larger Items within the furnished rental (pillows, extra bedding, comforters, wall hangings, etc.) were bagged and kept in the garage.

Contain & Clean the Space

  • We covered mattresses with polyethylene covers and sealed the seams with duct tape.

  • We washed all the bedding frequently and purchased inexpensive pillows we will dispose of after leaving. We used light blankets and sheets vs huge comforters which would trap mycotoxins.

  • We covered the couches in polyethylene couch covers and removed any extra soft furnishings that were not needed, ottomans, armchairs, etc.

  • We hired help to deep clean/Swiffer wipe all surfaces (walls, baseboards, blinds, doors, floors) to reduce mold spores, mycotoxins and dust.

Air Quality & Ventilation

  • Placed air purifiers in each room and ran them on high during/after vacuuming or when we were away from the home.

  • Opened windows and used fans for better airflow.

  • Daily HEPA vacuuming with plans to discard it after leaving, since mold-contaminated vacuums spread spores.

Bathroom & Drain Care

  • Scrubbed drains with vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda to reduce microbial buildup.

  • Washed shower curtains and kept bathrooms well-ventilated.

Support the Body

  • Focused on hydration and mineral-rich herbal infusions

  • Increased binders (zeolite, fiber support) to help eliminate toxins.

  • Added probiotics and liver support to aid detoxification.

  • Prioritize time outdoors—picnics, fresh air, and beach trips—to give our bodies a break from exposure.

What Improved

While we’re still completely not symptom-free. We noticed important changes after these steps:

• Our daughter stopped waking with bloody noses and began sleeping peacefully again.

• My partner’s numbness and tingling resolved, and his sleep improved.

• Our dog regained energy and appetite.

These small victories are proof that even short-term measures can reduce the toxic burden and help the body stabilize.

Key Takeaways for You, if you ever find yourself in a mold-exposed home:

Trust your symptoms—if everyone starts reacting suddenly, don’t dismiss it.

Act quickly to minimize exposure: contain belongings, clean surfaces, and support airflow.

Support your body with hydration, binders, and nutrient-dense foods.

Get outside as much as possible.

Final Note:

Mold exposure can feel overwhelming, but you are not powerless. With the right steps, you can protect yourself and your family while you navigate next moves. If you need help creating a personalized mold-recovery support plan, I’m here for you.

With care,

Krista
